Size: 6-9 ft. tall, with a similar spread.
Form: Deciduous shrub. Dense, bushy, rounded shrub of regular outline.
Bark:
Stem/Bud: Stems are aromatic when bruised, with distinctly raised, horseshoe-shaped leaf scars and prominent lenticels.
Leaves: Leaves are opposite, simple, entire, ovate to elliptic with an acute or acuminate tip, 2-5 inches long, fragrant when crushed, grayish-green and densely pubescent beneath.
Fall Color:
Flower: Flowers are reddish-brown, 2 inches across, very fragrant, borne singly and axillary in mid-May and sporadically through June and July.
Fruit: Fruit consists of an urn-shaped receptacle, somewhat capsule-like, enclosing many one-seeded achenes, brown in color. Fruit with poisonous seeds.
Uses: Specimen, border, foundation. Wet sites.

Notes: Grows best in moist loamy soil, but adaptible to many soils, both acid and alkaline.
