Distribution:  New Brunswick Canada, to Minnesota, south to South Carolina and Missouri.

Synonyms:

Size:   2-4 ft. by 3 ft.

Form:   Herbaceous perennial.

Bark:   

Stem/Bud:   Stems are erect, square, stiff, glabrous, hollow and unbranched.

Leaves:   Leaves are opposite, sessile, dark green, glabrous, linear to lance-shaped, 3-5 in. long, pointed, willow-like and have sharply incurved serrations.

Fall Color:   

Flower:   Flowers are red, purple or white, 2-lipped, tubular to bell-shaped, and clustered on dense 4-8 in. spikes; flowering June, July, August, to September. Flowers are spaced on 4 vertical rows with a hinge-like structure which allows individual florets to be moved.

Fruit:   Fruit are four glabrous nutlets.

Uses:   Use as a background plant in beds and borders in wildflower or perennial gardens. Use as a cut flower. Attracts butterflies.

Problems:      

Culture:   Grow in full sun to part-shade in moist, well-drained soil. Staking may be necessary.
