Distribution:  Minnesota to Quebec, south to Missouri, Georgia, and S. Carolina.

Synonyms:

Size:   12-18 in. by 24 in.

Form:   Herbaceous rhizomatous perennial and wildflower.

Bark:   

Stem/Bud:   Stems are stout, solitary, simple, unbranched, glabrous, erect and clump-forming.

Leaves:   Leaves are broadly ovate to diamond-shaped, pointed, 3-6 in. long and three in a whorl just below the flower.

Fall Color:   

Flower:   Flowers are solitary, waxy, 2-4 in. wide, veined and white turning pink; flowering April, May, to June. Flowers have three obovate, 2-3 in. long, erect and spreading petals, and three green, lance-shaped, 1.5 in. long, pointed, spreading sepals on terminal scapes.

Fruit:   Fruit are ovate, 6-lobed, 3/4-1 in. wide, red-purple berries.

Uses:   Found in shaded wood edges or stream banks. Use in woodland or wildflower gardens. Once used medicinally for treating eyes. Used as cooked greens.
