Distribution:  China.

Synonyms:

Size:   30-50 ft. tall, with a spread of 20-35 ft.

Form:   Deciduous. Upright tree, with a moderately pyramidal or conical form.

Bark:   

Stem/Bud:   Buds are large, pubescent, imbricate.

Leaves:   Leaves are alternate, simple, broad-ovate, almost rounded or cordate with a short point at the apex, l l/2 - 3 inches long, glossy and quite leathery in texture, dark green in color.

Fall Color:   Fall color is a spectacular scarlet and purple, holding the leaves until late fall.

Flower:   Flowers are white, l/3 inch across, borne in an ill-scented, 3 inch diameter corymb, before or with the leaves in late April and early May.

Fruit:   Fruit is a pome, l/2 inch or less across, russet, dotted, usually hidden by the foliage and not ornamentally effective.

Uses:   Street tree, patio tree. Dry sites.
